Medicare Drug Coverage
|
|
If you have Medicare coverage, or are eligible for it, you can sign up for a Medicare prescription drug plan.
Know what drugs you take and your costs. This will help you to decide whether a Medicare drug plan is best for you. Use the Medicine
Record form (PDF Format) to list the drugs that you take.
You can sign up for a Medicare drug plan, if you:
- Have Medicare coverage now
- Are age 65 or older
- Are disabled
If you have both Medicare coverage and are enrolled in a Medicaid program, you will be enrolled in a Medicare drug plan.
- Like other insurance, you will most likely pay a fee each month. You may also pay a yearly deductible.
This may be $250 or less in 2007. These fees, if any, will vary.
Theyre based on which drug plan you choose.
- You will likely pay a part of your drug costs. The costs depend on which plan you choose.
-
There is extra help for people with limited income and resources.
Almost 1 in 3 people with Medicare will qualify for extra help.
If you qualify, Medicare will pay for almost all of your prescription drug costs.
You can choose from at least two Medicare drug plans, based on where you live. Medicare will tell you about your options. This will help you compare plans. You can learn about your options at www.medicare.gov
or 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
Its available all day, every day.
- Review your current health plan. Are drugs covered? What
are your out-of-pocket drug costs now? What do you think they
will be in the future?
- Write down the name(s), dose(s), and cost(s)of your
drug(s). The plans cover different drugs. Your list will help
you to choose a plan that meets your needs. Use the Medicine
Record form (PDF Format) to list your drugs.
- If you have a low income, you should have received a
form from Medicare. If you didnt get the form, call 1-800-MEDICARE
(1-800-633-4227). Fill out the form and return it.
Ask if you qualify for assistance. Millions of people qualify
for a Medicare drug plan at lower costs. You might be one of them.
- If you have drug coverage through a former employer or union,
then ask your benefits administrator if your current coverage
is as good as Medicares. You may want to request a letter stating this, so that you can sign up for Medicare coverage without a penalty.
You can change your plan each year from November 15th through December
31st. Your new Medicare plan will take effect January 1st of the
next year.
If you don't sign up when you are first eligible, you may pay a penalty.
